When this is not configured, none of the modules are built as the Makefile in lttng-modules performs an ifneq() test for empty for this variable in the beginning. There is thus nothing to install and ship. This should not cause an image build failure in this case. Perhaps a warning that the desired modules were not built and thus not installed/shipped, with a hint to check the kernel configuration. I was testing an image which includes tools-profile. This used to be a QA warning before this commit to poky: http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/poky/commit/meta-yocto/conf/distro/poky.conf?id=c1df5188bb2851bcc5a3f483b0a0b4c4f884e3c7
