Description Alexandru Damian 2013-09-04 09:14:59 UTC
Microcode update 20130808 has been released, affecting desktop and server processors for i* family.

Release has been announced here. http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2013/09/msg00126.html

This update needs to be added to the meta-intel layer.
Comment 1 Ross Burton 2013-09-10 19:28:37 UTC
I can take this.
Comment 2 Ross Burton 2013-09-18 22:37:09 UTC
http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/meta-intel-contrib/log/?h=ross/ucode has basic recipes for the microcode and the tool. Just need to actually glue them together now.

Any ideea if this is going to make 1.6?
Comment 4 Ross Burton 2014-03-12 10:37:37 UTC
It's a feature, so no. The tricky bit is integrating the loader into the early boot (ie initramfs) so we should bump this to 1.7.
Comment 5 Nitin Kamble 2014-06-18 01:52:34 UTC
I have few commits which will get this implemented. Testing the commits now.
Comment 6 Nitin Kamble 2014-06-20 23:24:41 UTC
Sent the commits to meta-intel mailing list.

keeping this on hold for a while.

Meanwhile these side tasks are ongoing related to this work:
* I proposed Intel publishing the microcode data files through linux-firmware, to make it easier for the Linux community. I had good discussions with the people involved, and there is a good chance this will happen in a week or 2.
Once this happens then the intel-microcode recipe can go away, which simplifies the licensing issue.

* The INITRD variable usage is changed in the oecore layer. Now multile filesystem images can be specified, which makes the code for bundling the microcode in the initrd much simpler.
Comment 8 Nitin Kamble 2014-09-02 16:36:07 UTC
We are working to get the Intel microcode published through the linux-firmware repository hosted on kernel.org. It is taking some time, and till that happens the intel-microcode recipe is used to fetch the Intel microcode data. When the Intel microcode is available through the linux-firmware repository, at that time the intel-microcode recipe will be replaced by extensions to the linux-firmware recipe.

meta-intel BSPs: enable microcode loading support for images

For the BSPs using the meta-intel.inc file enable the early boot-time kernel
as well as the user space microcode loading support.

intel-microcode: a recipe for Intel microcode datafile

This recipe provides the microcode datafile for Intel Processors.

    The recipe provides:
     1. microcode.dat file for microcode updating from user space with the
        iucode-tool utility.
     2. the microcode cpio file which gets bundled with the initrd to support
microcode loading at early boot time.

iucode-tool: a new recipe for loading Intel CPU microcode

iucode_tool is a program to manipulate Intel i686 and X86-64 processor
microcode update collections, and to use the kernel facilities to update
the microcode on Intel system processors.

    meta-intel BSPs: include meta-intel.inc

To get common intel BSP configurations such as user land microcode loading
support, each Intel BSP configuration needs to include the meta-intel.inc
file. With the exception of few, many of the meta-intel BSP configuration
files already include the meta-intel.inc file. With this commit now, all
the remaining BSPs from the meta-intel layer also include the meta-intel.inc
    file.

The Intel platforms BSPs hosted outside of the meta-intel layer, such as
minnow, need to include the meta-intel.inc file to get the common features
    from the meta-intel layer.
