By the default the gcc linker will automatically link any dependant objects/libraries. "Inherited" linkages can cause issues, for example, where a shared object changes its dependencies but a program has come to rely on symbols from an implicitly linked library. Fedora 13 adopted explicit link requirements and have some deeper explanation of the matter: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/ChangeInImplicitDSOLinking https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/UnderstandingDSOLinkChange
Fedora use the following patch to gcc: http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/gitweb/?p=gcc.git;a=blob_plain;f=gcc45-no-add-needed.patch;hb=HEAD we may also need a slightly newer binutils
I will look into this.
(In reply to comment #1) > > we may also need a slightly newer binutils Josh, Why slightly newer binutils is needed ?
As of today the patch is in the master: http://git.pokylinux.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/poky/commit/?id=95fc6ae1649c86b5c2686385772cda35f5e7631f
