Qemux86, qemux86-64, qemuarm and qemumips don't have this issue on the same platform.

This issue doesn't happen on Fedora 21 x86_64

Update: I can reproduced this issue on 32 bit centos 6.6 and debian 7. I'm afraid this issue exists on all 32 bit host.

Huh.  Is it always the same file in mesa (src/mesa/format_utils in this log) that the build fails on?

Yes. I checked all logs in different hosts, They all failed with format_utils.

Still exists in 1.8 M2 rc2.

I re-tested with latest commit: master/870323cac1e40e8f95ea7bd6f425a85dcfbab612
The issue really disappeared. I noticed there is a commit to upgrade the mesa:

I will test it on more i686 platforms to ensure the issue has been fixed.

I re-tested it with latest master branch on 32 bit Fedora21, centos 6.6 and debian 7. The issue doesn't exist. We can close this bug.

Resolving worksforme as the problem can't be replicated with current master.
