The minimum kernel version has changed in newer versions of systemd. systemd 211 Linux kernel >= 3.0 CONFIG_DEVTMPFS CONFIG_CGROUPS (it's OK to disable all controllers) CONFIG_INOTIFY_USER CONFIG_SIGNALFD CONFIG_TIMERFD CONFIG_EPOLL CONFIG_NET CONFIG_SYSFS CONFIG_PROC_FS CONFIG_FHANDLE (libudev, mount and bind mount handling) systemd 212/213/214/215/216 Linux kernel >= 3.0 Linux kernel >= 3.3 for loop device partition support features with nspawn Linux kernel >= 3.8 for Smack support systemd 217/218/219 Linux kernel >= 3.7 Linux kernel >= 3.8 for Smack support The reason systemd 217+ requires Linux 3.7 or later is because user-space firmware loading support was removed in systemd and in-kernel firmware loading was introduced in Linux 3.7. Some BSPs may still be using older Linux kernel versions and we should probably document this kernel version requirement. Affected BSPs may experience firmware loading failures and a 60 second delay when trying to load firmware (e.g. for USB wifi dongles) if CONFIG_FW_LOADER=y is set in the kernel config,
Fixed by restoring userspace firmware loading support in the following commits: - https://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/poky/commit/?id=814252efd028ec99a15303d9a551e950e49a6726 - https://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/poky/commit/?id=4bd886fb0081954879aaa2f574f3c7f6ced745d5
