Description Cristian Iorga 2015-03-18 14:25:26 UTC
runqemu helper script should be able to also run other distros than the default poky, like poky-tiny for example.

Details regarding running poky-tiny distro:
https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/Poky-Tiny
Comment 1 Cristian Iorga 2015-04-29 08:10:06 UTC
runqemu script needs to be able to run poky-tiny so that automated QA tests can be used for poky-tiny distro.
Comment 2 Lucian Musat 2015-04-29 08:47:15 UTC
Hello Cristian,

There is already a qemu tiny runner and an automated QA test suite in place for poky tiny (meta/lib/oeqa/runtime/_qemutiny.py; meta/lib/oeqa/utils/qemutinyrunner.py)

qemux86 tiny should be able to boot using runqemu script using ramfs (as per comments in bug #3990)
Comment 3 Saul Wold 2016-02-12 17:21:17 UTC
As pointed out by Lucian, runqemu does support a qemux86 poky-tiny distro.
Simply running "runqemu qemux86 ramfs" with a core-image-minimal built with
poky-tiny works correctly.

Unless there are some other requirements that I am not aware of, I am closing
this.

The poky-tiny wiki should be updated.

What is the URL for this wiki? I will see if I have access rights to change it.

This appears to be a documentation task.

Hi,

I checked out the wiki link and there is no mention of the runqemu script at all. In the YP manual set, we have a section dedicated to the runqemu command at http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.2/dev-manual/dev-manual.html#qemu-using-the-runqemu-command.

I suspect we want to work in something about the using runqemu for poky-tiny.

I don't really know where to fix this section. In the section, there is a long list of runqemu options. Should we have tiny in there (i.e. "QEMUARCH", "VM", and "MACHINE")?

At the end of the section there are five examples of using runqemu. Should we add a sixth that uses poky-tiny?

Regarding the wiki... not sure what is required on that.

Yeah, that would work.

Don't worry about it - I just updated it.

Tom,

It looks like the wiki (https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/Poky-Tiny) is pretty complete on using runqemu to support running poky-tiny. From reading it, it appears that all one has to do is set DISTRO to poky-tiny in the local.conf file as follows:

   DISTRO = "<layer-name>-tiny"

And then the user can run the following to run a qemux86 build and specify to boot an initial RAM disk image:

   runqemu qemux86 ramfs

Is that correct? I can create another example that states you must set the DISTRO variable first (e.g. "poky-tiny" and then note the runqemu command. I can also provide a link into the poky-Tiny wiki page for details.

Will that suffice for the doc portion of this bug?

Thanks,
Scott

I don't know what <layer-name>-tiny means.

The information on the wiki page should be correct. I guess you should ask the originator of the bug as to what will suffice for the doc portion.

Cristian,

Can you look at the thread of comments here and give me some input?

Thanks,

Assigning to Cristian since that's who NEEDINFO from.
Comment 16 Robert Yang 2016-10-12 08:48:42 UTC
I tried:

$ runqemu tmp/deploy/images/qemux86/ ramfs

It works well for me. I will update poky-tiny.conf a little, so that we can boot it by:
$ runqemu tmp/deploy/images/qemux86/

Here is the patch:

I ran out of time for this in 2.2. I am putting it to 2.3 M1.

Since the wiki is good on this, I am setting the doc flag to "done."
