There are some software packages out there that ship libraries, but only build them statically (bind is one example), thus the dependency from the -dev package on the main package is completely superfluous. We should be able to detect this at packaging time and get rid of the runtime dependency, so we can avoid having to do this explicitly within the recipe.
See also bug 6839.
Hello, i'm willing to work on this issue, i tried to build bind package, i expected to get a -dev dependency on main package, but it was not the case, is the issue solved ?
This use case produce actually an RRECOMMEND on the main package, shall we get rid of that weak dependency if the main package is empty ? Since RRDEPENDS are RRECOMMENDS, shall we clean recipes from past hacks that used to bypass this issue ( DEV_PKG_DEPENDENCY = "" and ALLOW_EMPTY:${PN} = "1")
ping.
Sent a RFC patch about this bug : https://lists.openembedded.org/g/openembedded-core/topic/rfc_patch_0_2_handling_of/97195657
I put some information about this into an oe-arch email: https://lists.openembedded.org/g/openembedded-architecture/message/1701
I was asked about the status of this. I don't think there were objections to what I proposed in the email so I'd suggest we proceed in that direction.
