Description Geoffroy Van Cutsem 2016-02-16 16:49:04 UTC
The documentation on how to modify the kernel source code gives an incorrect location of where to find the kernel sources:
 You can find the sources in the ${WORKDIR}/linux directory.

There is no such ${WORKDIR}/linux. On my system, I found the kernel sources (but no .config file, is this expected?) under ${WORKDIR}/linux-${PACKAGE_ARCH}-${LINUX_KERNEL_TYPE}-build/source (which is a symlink to another folder).

Hi,

I am adding Darren to this bug...

Darren, can you look at the http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.0/kernel-dev/kernel-dev.html#modifying-source-code section of the kernel-dev manual and comment?

Thanks,
Scott

Setting to NEEDINFO. I need input on this bug for the docs.

Assigned to Darren to get the NEEDINFO. Darren, if you are not the right person to provide that, please assign to someone on the kernel team.

Setting to 2.2.... Not going to get the time to get this in before doc freeze.

I understand many of us are really busy but it feels awkward that no-one has been able to confirm whether the path I mentionned in my initial report is correct or not, this after close to 2 months.

Sorry for the delay, you are correct, the source actually moved a couple of releases ago to the work-shared area, thus the symlink you mentioned above.

So the sources are in ${WORKDIR}/linux-${PACKAGE_ARCH}-${LINUX_KERNEL_TYPE}-build/source which points to tmp/work-shared/${MACHINE}/kernel-source (which is ${STAGING_KERNEL_DIR}). The .config once generated via the kernel_configme task is in ${WORKDIR}/linux-${PACKAGE_ARCH}-${LINUX_KERNEL_TYPE}-build/.config

I need to work with ScottR to update that section as at this point the devtool would be a good item to mention also.

Yes,

We need to look at that section referenced in Comment 1 and move forward with the docs for the 2.1+ stuff.

Fix posted to yocto list:

https://lists.yoctoproject.org/pipermail/yocto/2016-May/029916.html
Comment 9 Scott Rifenbark 2016-06-06 20:33:59 UTC
Here are the affected sections with corrections:

 * http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.2/kernel-dev/kernel-dev.html#generating-configuration-files
 * http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.2/kernel-dev/kernel-dev.html#modifying-source-code

Once these are okay'd you can turn the doc flag off.
