It only supports cpio.gz atm, we can make it support more fs types such as ext4, which can be widely used.
FWIW I have some reservations about this idea, ext4 doesn't really make sense for a tiny system. Randy/Saul/Tom to have a discussion before this moves forward.

Hi RP, What I really need is a smaller kernel, our default linux-yocto is a little big, for example, qemux86-64's, it is 6.3M which is similar to Ubuntu's 6.6M. When I want to make a small image, it is easy to make rootfs smaller, but not easy for kernel. Since qemux86-64 is aimed for qemu only, is it possible to make it smaller ? And if the user needs a more generic one, we have genericx86 and genericx86-64. I will send an email to mailing list for discussion.

I think Bug 5520 - poky-tiny enhancements covers the smaller kernel you're describing. I've just updated that bug with the most recent information.
