Worth checking (and sorry for the noise if they're not relevant :) ) I think they are possibly relevant, the issue being more likely being related to "Remove redundant PyThread_exit_thread() call".
There are two workarounds mentioned, one:
import ctypes
libgcc_s = ctypes.CDLL("libgcc_s.so.1")
and the other to LD_PRELOAD libgcc.
I'm wondering if we should add the above conditional on python version 3.8/3.9 before we start any threads?
