there were bugs in cpython <3.10 and even newer: https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/62948 https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/88600 which may (not) be relevant. Worth checking (and sorry for the noise if they're not relevant :) )
I think they are possibly relevant, the issue being more likely being related to "Remove redundant PyThread_exit_thread() call". There are two workarounds mentioned, one: import ctypes libgcc_s = ctypes.CDLL("libgcc_s.so.1") and the other to LD_PRELOAD libgcc. I'm wondering if we should add the above conditional on python version 3.8/3.9 before we start any threads?

So I managed to break bitbake and managed to wedge it with all of the Parser proccesses hanging with ~900 pipes open each. If this can happen in normal use then that would explain fd exhaustion.
