Our remote communication is based on RSE and supported services. Currently the extension is mainly used in remote tools plug-in. To allow supporting other remote communication, e.g. in bitbake commander and ADT for remote projects interaction, we need to refactor the code to create a common remote communication utility plug-in that other feature plugins that need to do remote communication just to include these plug-in in the dependence list. This will dramatically reduce code duplication and easy to maintain.
Hi Jessica, Is there an update regarding this feature?
There are still some patches that need to be merged upstream in order to be merge these changes onto master. Follow this upstream bug: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=411343 The implementation for this feature is on eclipse-poky branch common-remote-refactor2.
Hi Jessica, Ioana, Do we know when upstream changes will be merged? Also, please note that the target milestone is M1 and should be changed since we are post M1. Thanks, Alex.
the code is commited int http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/eclipse-poky-kepler/commit/?id=73cb94acdc81fd876c7da1c49334da9e714b11ee
we don't have control over upstream even though we've been continue pinging them
Upstream will merge our patch to 3.6 which is for post Kepler release, so this one can't happen for 1.5

Note that with Eclipse Luna, the PTP project (version 8.0) has introduced new API in org.eclipse.remote that AFAIK is designed to do exactly this: provide a generic API for remote connections that does not depend on RSE but supports different adapters / providers. With my patch attached to bug 6251 , the org.yocto.bc.ui plug-in is updated to using the new API. Remaining work would be getting rid of any direct references to RSE and replace them with respective reference to org.eclipse.remote.core / org.eclipse.remote.ui where possible.
(In reply to comment #2) According to https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=411343 , those upstream changes have also been released with Eclipse Luna so this should not be blocked any more. Status should now be "IN PROGRESS IMPLEMENTATION" I guess since some changes already exist on the eclipse-poky branch common-remote-refactor2.
The current design is to run Eclipse in the development VM and therefore there are no plans to implement remote project support.
